Local tips
A few pointers from our on-the-ground team.
-
Take winter roads seriously
Snow days are part of the charm, but they take planning. Give yourself extra time and check CalTrans before heading over Donner Summit on I-80—it’ll save you stress (and surprises). -
Respect the (wild) locals
Bears, coyotes, and even the occasional beaver call this place home. Keep your distance, secure your food, and enjoy the rare chance to see wildlife up close (safely). -
Turn off your lights and look up
Turn off the lights at night and step outside. With little light pollution, the stars put on a show you won’t get back in the city. -
Put fire safety first
With dense forests all around, outdoor fires are often restricted. Always check local guidelines before lighting anything—and when in doubt, skip it. -
Always keep pets leashed up
Whenever you’re not in a fenced-in area, keep pets on a leash to avoid any unwelcome run-ins with wildlife. -
That crystal-clear water stays cold, even through summer. If you’re heading out, play it safe and gear up so the only surprise is how refreshing it feels.
This Memorial Day weekend tradition features a harbor invasion, live music, and fireworks.
