Fight for stillness
Outside ski season and the occasional weekend traffic, Oregon's small mountain towns have very little agenda. For some, that kind of quiet takes getting used to—lean into it. -
Gear up for mountain conditions
Weather and road conditions can change quickly, so rent a vehicle suited for snow or rough terrain and check conditions ahead of time to avoid delays or getting stuck. -
Permits and campsites go fast
Oregon's most-loved campsites and trail permits book out months in advance. If camping's on the itinerary, it's the first reservation you should make, not the last. -
Follow Leave No Trace principles
Oregonians care deeply for the environment. Stay on marked trails, respect closures, pack out trash, and leave wildflowers, mushrooms, and natural spaces undisturbed. -
Not every gas station is self-serve
Oregon made self-service legal statewide in 2023, but stations aren't required to offer it. Tipping gas attendants isn’t expected but appreciated for extras, like a windshield cleaning or tire check. -
