Local tips
A few pointers from our on-the-ground team.
-
Wave back at every passing car
Locals wave at every passing car, bike, and pedestrian, a long standing island custom, so don't be shy about waving back. -
Download offline maps before you go
Cell service is patchy across most of the island, so save your directions ahead of time. -
Come with a plan already in mind
There are no stoplights, rental cars, public transportation, or movie theaters on the island, so figure out your days before you arrive. -
Visit the beaches before 11am or after 4pm
Midday tends to fill in during summer, so early or late gives you the most peaceful stretch of sand. -
Look for monthly First Friday and First Saturday events
First Fridays bring live music around the village, and First Saturdays bring art walks through local galleries and shops, both running monthly. -
Arrive early for your return ferry
You can reserve the ferry to Lopez, but not the return trip, so plan to arrive at the terminal with time to spare.
